Nubbed Bone Dog Chew Toy with Elastic Cord and Cord Lock

The dog hears the cord lock click and is already on its feet.

It is a bone, moulded in one piece, in a single mid blue. The waist is narrow enough for a jaw to close around it and both ends flare out, and the whole surface, ends included, is studded with short rounded nubs rather than spikes. Squeeze it between a thumb and two fingers and the body gives, then comes back.

Through one end runs a blue braided elastic cord, doubled back into a loop and held by a small spring cord lock that slides along it. That is what turns a bone on the floor into a bone you can hold at arm's length, hang on a hook by the door, or clip your fingers through during a game of tug. The whole thing weighs 80 g.

Key Benefits

• Nubs on every surface The studs cover the waist and both flared ends, so there is no smooth patch for a paw or a jaw to slide off. They are rounded, not pointed.
• Bone shape a jaw can close on The narrow middle is what makes this shape work: the dog can carry it crosswise and still get teeth around it, and the flared ends stop it sliding straight through.
• Cord loop and cord lock A blue elastic cord threads through one end and closes into a loop with a sliding spring lock, so the toy hangs on a hook or stays in your hand while the dog pulls.
• Flexible, not rigid The body compresses under finger pressure and springs back, which is the difference between a chew toy and a solid block.

Best for: a dog that carries things around, drops them, and comes back for another go, in a household that keeps toys on a hook by the lead rather than in a basket, and for an owner who stays in the room while the dog chews.

Why It Works

Two things make this different from the plain moulded bone that every shop sells. The first is the studding: a smooth bone slides out of a mouth and skitters under the sofa, while a nubbed one stays where the teeth put it and gives a paw something to hold. The second is the cord, which is the part most bone toys do not have. With the loop over a wrist the bone becomes a tug handle, and with the lock slid up it hangs flat against a wall instead of rolling around a floor. Those are the two things this bone does that a plain one does not.

How It Fits Your Routine

It lives on the hook next to the lead, hanging by its cord where the dog can see it and not reach it. You take it down when you want the dog occupied, you put it back up when you are done, and it does not end up wet under a cushion.

In the garden it works as a tug: loop over the wrist, let the dog take the middle, and the flared ends give the jaw something to close behind. Indoors it is a carry toy, the kind that gets brought to your feet and dropped there twice a minute.

Rinse it under a warm tap and let it air dry when it comes back muddy. Look it over each time it goes back on the hook: nubs shearing off, splits at the waist, or teeth marks through the cord all mean it is finished, and a finished chew toy goes in the bin rather than back on the hook.

FAQ

Is this something my dog can eat? No. It is a moulded toy and nothing about it is food. Nothing on it is meant to be swallowed, and if pieces start coming away, take it off the dog and throw it out.

What is the body like? A single moulded piece of flexible material that gives under a squeeze and springs back, studded end to end with short rounded nubs and finished in one mid blue.

Is the cord part of the toy, and can the dog chew it? The cord and its plastic lock are threaded through the bone in every photograph, so yes, they come with it. They are fabric and plastic, not chew material. Hold the cord or take it off, and never leave a dog alone with a cord around a toy.

How big is it? It weighs 80 g, a light bone sized for a dog to carry crosswise and bring back. Compare that weight against a chew your dog already uses to judge the fit.
