The phone buzzes at seven in the morning and there is a nuthatch on your feeder.
You are still in the kitchen. The clip is eleven seconds long, shot from inside the trunk looking straight out across the tray, close enough that you can see the bird turn a sunflower seed over in its beak before it goes. That framing is the point of the whole object. The camera is not bolted to a pole watching a feeder from three metres away; it is built into the back wall of the feeder, at beak height, with the perch bar in focus.
The housing is moulded in a bark finish under a green leaf roof, on a back plate with a hanging slot and a strap channel. The tray in front is cut with drainage holes and a curved perch rail. The maker cotes the tray at 1.5 litres and gives the camera as 1920 by 1080 at 15 frames a second, on a 1.8 mm F3.0 lens with a very wide field. Behind it sit a 6400 mAh battery, a microphone and a speaker, and the 6 watt solar panel arrives on its own separate bracket.
Key Benefits
- Camera inside the feeder The lens looks out across the tray from the back wall, so birds fill the frame instead of being a speck at the far end of a garden.
- It feeds itself A 6 watt panel on its own arm, against a stated draw of 0.03 W on standby and 3 W at night, with a 6400 mAh battery between the two.
- Night vision both ways The maker offers full colour and black and white night modes, with two white LEDs beside the lens.
- Talk and listen A built in microphone and speaker, so the tray has sound and you can speak through it.
- WiFi or 4G A 2.4 GHz WiFi version for a feeder in range of the house, or a 4G version for the far end of a field. The maker rates the housing IP65.
Best for: a garden, allotment or balcony where the feeder is visible from a window but not close enough to watch properly, and for anyone who wants the clip rather than the glimpse.
Why It Works
Two design decisions carry this product. The first is the camera position: putting it in the back wall of the feeder turns a wide angle lens into a close up lens, because the subject comes to a fixed point 15 cm away. The second is the separate solar panel. A panel moulded into a roof faces wherever the feeder faces; a panel on its own arm faces the sun. That is what makes the power budget work on a device that streams video. On the software side, the maker states that its recognition system identifies over eleven thousand bird species. That is the maker's figure and its system, not a measurement we have made, and it depends on the app rather than on the hardware.
Quick Product Facts: bark finish housing with leaf roof and perch rail; seed tray coted by the maker at 1.5 L; camera 1920 x 1080 at 15 fps main and 640 x 360 at 15 fps sub; 1.8 mm F3.0 lens; motion sensor range given as 7 m; colour and black and white night modes with two LEDs; two way audio; 6400 mAh 3.7 V battery; 6 W monocrystalline panel on a separate bracket; microSD supported up to 128 GB; WiFi 2.4 GHz 802.11 b/g/n or 4G nano SIM depending on version; IP65 as given by the maker; operating range given as minus 20.5 to 48.5 C; 2.54 kg.
How It Fits Your Routine
Set up is a two part job and worth doing in daylight. Mount the feeder where you can reach it to fill it, then mount the panel where it can see the southern sky, and run the lead between them before you fill the tray. Pair it to the app last, with the unit in your hands rather than on the post.
After that it is a feeder first and a camera second. Fill the tray once or twice a week, brush the drainage holes clear so wet seed does not sit in them, and wipe the lens cover when you do. The clips arrive on their own.
The seasons change what you get. Winter brings volume and a crowded tray; spring brings fewer birds and better behaviour, because they stay to feed rather than raiding. If it sits under a tree, expect to wipe the roof more often than the lens.
FAQ
Is a memory card included? No. The maker states support for a microSD card up to 128 GB but lists none in the box, and mentions cloud storage only as compatible. Buy a card with it, and do not assume free cloud storage.
Do the 4G versions come with a SIM? No. A 4G version needs a nano SIM that you supply, on a network whose bands match the regional version you buy. Choose the US or EU version to match where you live, and check with your operator before ordering.
Which app does it use? The maker does not name one in its documentation, and a phone app is required to see anything at all. If that matters to you, ask us before ordering rather than after.
Does it really recognise eleven thousand species? That is the maker's own figure for its recognition system. We are passing it on, not confirming it, and we have not tested it against any list.
