The scooter cuts out under load, then works again cold, then cuts out sooner.
That pattern almost never means the motor. It means the box bolted inside the deck, the one that takes the battery in and feeds the three phase wires out. When a controller starts to go it usually goes like this: fine from cold, gutless on a hill, dead by the top. This is a replacement for that box. A ribbed metal case the size of a large phone, a printed label on one face, and a loom of colour coded leads out of the end.
The label carries the numbers that matter: brushless dc motor controller, battery voltage 24, 36 and 48V, cut off voltage 19, 29 and 39V plus or minus half a volt, motor power 500 W. The maker gives the case as aluminium alloy and the loom as 1.5 m, and publishes a drawing that cotes the 500 W case at 125 by 50 by 30 mm. The packing list holds the controller and nothing else.
Key Benefits
- One controller for three battery voltages The label gives 24, 36 and 48V with a matching cut off for each, so it covers the three packs most scooters and light e-bikes run.
- Cut off printed on the case 19, 29 and 39V plus or minus half a volt. Knowing the cut off before you fit is what tells you whether it will suit your pack.
- Full colour coded loom Phase, hall, throttle, brake and self learn leads all come out pre terminated, on a loom the maker gives as 1.5 m.
- Aluminium alloy case The maker names the case material, and the fins are there to shed heat from the power stage rather than for looks.
- Small enough for a deck The maker drawing cotes the 500 W case at 125 by 50 by 30 mm, which is the figure to measure against, not the packed size.
Best for: the owner or repairer replacing a failed brushless controller on a 24V, 36V or 48V scooter, who can identify a phase lead from a hall lead without a diagram.
Why It Works
A brushless motor has no brushes to switch its own coils, so something has to do it electronically: the controller reads the hall sensors, works out where the rotor is, and fires the three phases in turn. That is why the loom is so wide and why every lead has to land in the right place. It is also why the cut off voltage on the label matters more than the wattage. A controller set to stop at 39V will shut a 48V pack down before the cells are damaged; the same controller on a 36V pack will simply never reach its cut off. Read the label against your pack first, then worry about the power figure.
Quick Product Facts: brushless DC motor controller for electric scooters; case label gives battery voltage 24, 36 and 48V; cut off voltage 19, 29 and 39V plus or minus half a volt; motor power 500 W; case material given by the maker as aluminium alloy; loom given by the maker as 1.5 m; maker drawing cotes the 500 W case at 125 by 50 by 30 mm; packing list is one controller.
How It Fits Your Routine
Start with a photograph, not a spanner. Open the deck, shoot the existing loom from two angles with the plugs still mated, and only then start unplugging. Colour coding varies between builders, and a photo taken before you touch anything is the cheapest insurance in this job.
Fitting is a bench job even when the scooter is on the floor. Lay the leads out, mate them one pair at a time, and leave the battery plug until last. Once it runs, cable tie the loom clear of the deck plate so nothing chafes, and put the controller where warm air can leave the fins.
After that there is nothing to service. Keep the deck seals in good order, because water in the deck is what kills most controllers, and keep the pack inside the voltage band on the label.
FAQ
Is a display included? No. A handlebar LCD unit appears in several of the maker photographs, but the packing list names one brushless controller and nothing else. Order the display separately and do not count on it arriving in this box.
What current does it handle? We are not quoting one. The current output line on the 500 W label is not legible in any maker photograph, and a current figure is too important to guess at.
What size is the case? The maker drawing gives 125 by 50 by 30 mm for the 500 W version. The written sheet says 21 by 15 by 10 cm, which matches neither the drawing nor the photographs, so measure your deck against the drawing figure.
Can I fit it myself? Only if phase, hall, throttle and brake leads mean something to you. There is no wiring diagram in the pack, the battery leads carry real current, and a wrong pairing can destroy the controller on first power up. Otherwise use a scooter shop.
