You set them down on the living room floor, a hand span apart, and the first thing you notice is that they do not skitter. The black pads under each block bite the boards. Then you take hold, and instead of your palm going flat on cold tile the fingers close right round a turned dowel, the way they would round a broom handle. Your chest drops between the two bars and you get lower than the floor ever let you.
Each bar is three pieces of the same beech: two solid end blocks and one turned dowel run between them. The four sided block is a trapezoid, wider at the floor than at the top. The hexagonal one cuts the same silhouette with angled shoulders. Nothing folds, nothing bolts on, and the grain runs visibly through both the block and the bar. Spans are 20, 25, 30, 40 and 50 cm, and both shapes come in all five.
Best for: anyone who trains on hard floors and wants the hand wrapped round a bar rather than flat on tile, and who would rather buy something made of one material than something moulded from four.
A push up on the floor stops when your chest touches. A bar lifts the hands, so the chest keeps travelling past them, and that single change is why parallettes have outlived every gadget sold alongside them. Beech is the reason this version is quiet: a wooden block and a fitted pad make almost no noise on floorboards, where a steel frame rings. The dowel is turned rather than moulded, which means it is the same diameter along its whole length and your hand can slide out toward the block for a wider set without leaving the grip. The maker also lists handstand work among the uses, but publishes no load rating, which is worth knowing before you go upside down on one.

Week one is just push ups, done properly. Bars set under the shoulders, chest down between them, and you feel the extra travel immediately at the bottom. Most people do fewer reps on the first day than they did on the floor, which is the point.
Later the span becomes a variable. Hands wide on a 50 cm bar is a different exercise from hands close on a 20 cm one, and because both shapes are offered in every span you can pick the one that suits your floor and your shoulders rather than accepting one size.
Between sessions they live wherever a pair of shoes would. Wood wants a dry room and a wipe rather than a wash: a damp cloth and a dry cloth after it, and no soaking, since a solid block will raise its grain if you leave water sitting on it.
