FAQ

Questions before checkout

Does it need batteries or a plug?
No. The flame effect tea light has a small solar panel on top that charges from daylight and stores power in a rechargeable cell, so there is nothing to plug in and no disposable batteries to swap. Set it where it gets a few hours of direct sun through the day and it powers itself for the evening.
When does it turn on?
A built in light sensor reads the sky and switches the lantern on by itself at dusk, then off again at sunrise. There is no switch to press and no timer to set. Once it has charged through the day it lights up on its own each evening and rests through the morning.
Is it a real flame?
No. The candle look comes from a flickering LED, so there is no smoke, no wax and no open fire. That makes it safe to hang near plants, fabric and timber where a real candle would be a risk, while it still gives the warm, moving glow of candlelight across the garden at night.
Can I hang it outdoors?
Yes. Each ball comes with a chain and hook, so you can hang it from a tree branch, a shepherd hook, a pergola beam or a balcony rail. You can also lift the chain off and rest the ball on a table, a windowsill or a garden wall. The metal frame is made to stay outside through the season.
How big is the lantern?
The openwork ball is about the size of a tennis ball, roughly eight to nine centimetres across, and it holds a standard flame effect tea light. The chain adds extra length for hanging. It is sized to cluster a few together on a table or to line several along a path without looking bulky.
How do I put the tea light in?
The metal ball opens into two halves on a small hinge. Open it, drop the solar flame effect tea light into the cup at the base with the panel facing up, then close the two halves. The chain clips to the top so you can hang it, or you can leave the chain off and stand the ball on a flat surface.
What can I do with a set of four?
A set of four lets you line a path, hang a row along a fence or pergola, or cluster them on an outdoor table for a soft pool of light. Because each ball is self contained and solar charged, you can spread them wherever they catch daylight, with no cords to link them or hide.
Will it last outside in the rain?
The metal ball frame is made for outdoor use through the warmer months on a patio, balcony or in a garden bed. As with most solar garden lights, give the tea light a wipe now and then and bring it in over harsh winter weather to keep the panel and cell in good shape for the next season.
